Automatic transmission for OM.606?

I now have my OM.606 and need to find the best transmission to fit. I will need it to stand around 300-350BHP

I have a 722.6 that it came with, but no way in which to control it--all electronic...

So, whats best for auto-trans?

We are here with jeemu and Mr.Lager and we are thinking of a 722.4 reinforced by Siekkinen. It's pure cryptonite isotope 4

Wiser guys, such as JTY, could correct if they know an automatic tranny that's even more cryptonite (MB brand that is).

Thats very good news! I'm really hoping I can keep auto-transmission in my W123- Much nicer to drive Auto!

The 722.4 is reasonably easy to get here in UK, but which one to get?--Guessing from something like 190D 2.5 or the gasser 2.6 from W124?
(My W123 has 722.4, but made for OM.617 so will Not fit a 606...)

Do you think Mr Siekkinen would tell us how to modify the transmission, I'm based in UK so shipping a trans. to and from Finland would be expensive, Maybe he can supply the parts?

Use transmmission what is use on diesel, no gasoline box.

Here people use w124 300 turbo D what is reinforced by Siekkinen or JM_-Kone

I can find a W124 300D 722.4 trans, But there were no Turbo W124 300D cars in UK.

There were W124 250D Turbo cars, but not sure what trans those have....

I go to dismantlers, any idea of the whole number of transmission to look for, ie--722.4xxx? And approximate ages these were used?

What modifications are done inside the transmission? I have re-built automatic trans before and could possibly do the modifications myself. Maybe your guys can supply special parts?

I think that there are other things done to the tranny besides changing the bands, disc plates and increasing the amount of them. I think one thing could be that you would buy the tranny from Siekkinen and I could help with that if necessary.

I explain my problem....

Two weeks ago, I lost my job, so money is going to be limited. I had already got the OM.606 and paid for it before this.

My current (and the other car) is W123 wagon with OM.617 N/A.

I'm thinking my best way forward would be one of two ways. Wait until another job comes along and then go for 'super-turbo'

--OR--

Fit OM.606 to whatever auto-trans I can find here in UK--hopefully a W124 250 turbo-diesel trans, 722.3/4. and replace the fuel-injection-pump for a 6 cyl. M.B. pump from 606 N/A non elect, and set fuelling higher. or OM.603 turbo--IF I find one here in UK....

At least in 'normal' form, the power to the old 617 is nearly doubled with using 606 Turbo motor.
--Then when I get money, I can get 'proper' trans, big turbo and modify pump, manifolds and exhaust-system....
--Doing it this way, I'm thinking half the work is already done, although I'll have to replace the trans later...

Well, Ive found a transmission that will enable me to at least fit the 606 to the car!

Got a 603 Injection pump too from same car.

Trans is from 1992 W124 300TD (N/A) wagon....

That transmission wont take that much of power ever, not atleast for long. OM606A orginal trans is not fully electronic, so it should be just the 5 gear and TCC. And is doable to get it work without the IP controller, there are a few wires that need connection some where from the trans controller but at the moment I dont remember where they should go. And that trans can take some abuse..

I don´t know how it goes in UK, but can´t you buy transmission from Germany or Sweden etc? I have bought a couple engines from http://www.bildelsbasen.se/ and shipping to Finland is not that expensive.

I had it cheap with the I.P. so doesnt really matter if it breaks!--Do you know what breaks in these?

Very interested in your comment about using the original 606 turbo trans, I have this still, its a 722.608. Be great if you can find out/remember what to connect wires to where to make it work!

I have the engine elect. module and I think I have the trans elect module, mounted on top.....

YES! I have just checked, I do still have that transmission controller, EGS51, 021 545 08 32, made by Siemens...

--Guessing 'early 5 speed trans' from W210 you are thinking about is 722.5 which is actually 722.3 with added Overdrive gear, and very different to 722.6....

Out of sheer curiosity, How Much would a modified Siekkenen 722.3 transmission cost?--Just a rough idea would be great...

Regarding Transmission, I'm thinking I'm going to have to make car 'Manual' transmission as the cost to keep it 'auto' is going to be high...

To confirm,--the 'Manual' trans used is 'Cosworth' dog-leg from 16V 2.3 190E car...yes??

Yes that Getrag box is pretty strong and people use it a lot in here on their ST MB.

Only minus is that has straight 5, so rear diff must be pretty long gear.

Hi. There is no stupid questions.

I have now on my car 5 speed box what has over drive 5 gear.
That box what i have is used an 260e ambulance. Same box is used also on 300e.
I think at number that box at fist that is use on w126. That was short cluch axle, but i change long model of it.

I have now "king" diff on my car and ratio is 3.27. That is good for nearly 300km/h

So, I look for a 190E, W201 2.6 5 speed or 300E W124 Manual 5 speed gearbox?--Similar/same as yours?

Getrag from 2.3 16V is 'expensive' here because name 'COSWORTH' attached and difficult to find, but found one on ebay for £150, but dont know if the gear-linkages and controls are with it....

Be much easier and probably cheaper to get good/re-built 300E W124 Manual Transmission and shift-linkages.....

It Must be Strong to cope with your 550 BHP, My 350 BHP be 'easy going' for it!

My Final-Drive is currently 3.45, bit 'taller' than yours, but will be OK....

I dont remember what that box number are. I have wery poor hard drive
I think at AlluD has better one and can tell that.
